Trading Terminal vs DEX: Why You Need Both
A lot of people ask me: do I need a trading terminal or can I just use a DEX? The answer is both. They serve different purposes and the best traders use them together.
DEXs (Jupiter, Uniswap, PancakeSwap) are good for simple swaps. You want to buy ETH with SOL? Use a DEX. You want to check a token price? Use a DEX. They are free, easy, and work for basic stuff.
Trading terminals (Padre, Axiom, GMGN) are for when you need speed and data. If you are flipping memecoins, 200ms delay on a DEX means you buy at the top. Terminals give you smart money tracking, real-time order books, and faster execution. They also aggregate liquidity across multiple DEXs, so you get better prices.
My workflow: I use GMGN to find plays (smart money feed, Telegram alerts). Then I use Padre to execute (fastest, cheapest). For simple swaps like loading up my wallet with SOL, I use Jupiter. Each tool has its place.
If you are just getting started, use a DEX. Learn how swaps work, understand slippage, get comfortable with wallet connections. Once you start trading actively (5+ trades per day), get a terminal. The speed difference will pay for itself in a week.
Start with Padre for execution and GMGN for discovery. That combo covers 90% of what you need.
